Azadi Stadium is located in West Tehran, as part of the Azadi Sports Complex.The stadium is surrounded by a number of grass pitches, built there for training purposes.The stadium was built in 1973 and is Iran's national and largest stadium.The stadium was built to hold the 1974 Asian Summer Games, and had the capacity of 100,000.The capacity was reduced in 2002, when the lower part of the stadium had seats installed, and now has the capacity of 90,000.Originaly the stadium was named the Aryamehr Stadium in honour of the former Shah of Iran, but after the Iranian Revolution it was renamed the Azadi Stadium.
